Passion for Grafica!

Cosmic's passion for Grafica technology began in 2002 when it bought a 4' x 8' large format screen printing machine. Since then there was no turning back. Satisfied with the first machine, the company bought 4 semi automatic camshell screen printing machines out of which one machine is of 40” x 60” size. Cosmic also acquired complete pre press set up. And now, it has filled its arsenal with Grafica's AccuSpeed, a fully automatic flatbed screen printing machine.

But at this juncture of slow down, why did Cosmic decide to buy a high end machine?
“Our customers want their job to be delivered fast hence we need to execute their orders with speed. Our 'Capacity Analysis' showed that, Cosmic should decrease the throughput time of jobs by enhancing efficiency. Grafica's AccuSpeed is meant for higher print run since other machines are having lower speed. We found this high end machine perfectly suiting our current production requirement”, thus comes the answer from none other than Mr. Pravesh K. Lamba, Cosmic's Managing Director.

“As per our knowledge, till today there is no machine available in the market which is capable of printing on rigid substrates such as sunpack and sunboard upto 5 mm thick. So, AccuSpeed, as the word suggests is a machine to print faster with high accuracy on thick substrates. Now we are able to increase our production capacity. Also, since a semi automatic machine requires more man power and delivers less output as compared to a fully automatic machine, we had to deploy an AccuSpeed.

GraficaNews editor tried to find out Cosmic's driving force behind their continued success and their passion for Grafica technology. Here are excerpts from the telephonic/online interview with Mr. P.K. Lamba, Cosmic Advertisers Pvt. Ltd., MD, Mr. Surya P. Lamba, the new kid on the block (Sr Lamba's son) and Cosmic's Production Head, Mr. Swapan Kumar Mahato.

When and how did you come in contact with Grafica?
At various industry exhibitions in Mumbai and New Delhi somewhere in 2001-02.

Is it AccuSpeed a value for money?
Yes it is. We are confident that the machine will enable us deliver higher output. To begin with, we are able to achieve our current production targets. In turn we are able to satisfy our high end customers with prompt delivery and enhanced quantity. Having such high end machine increases customers' confidence in our capabilities. So, production wise, it is a value for money.

What is your experience with AccuSpeed so far?
Quality of the machine is excellent and we are able to achieve the desired results. It does not require much maintenance even after running the machines for long hours. We are especially happy with the quality of their spares made of good raw materials hence the machine can withstand the production pressures. There are cases where we had to run the machine for more than 12 hours daily. AccuSpeed is a heavy duty machine and very much suits our dual requirements (higher productivity and quality).

The driving force behind your screen printing operation:
Grafica is a backbone of our screen printing operations. They give us full technical support. Dealing with Grafica is a professional experience; it is a unique and committed company. They were capable of consistently improving our machines through lot of R&D during project implementation. Also, on an ongoing basis, whenever we seek their help for improvement in the machine's system in order to suit our operations, they are ready to help us. This is something unique.

'A good printer is no more a printer but he is a service provider'. Your views on this:
It is absolutely right. As per our experience, our customers want nothing less than QUALITY and TIMELY delivery. As a total print solution provider in advertising and display space, we offer our services right from concept, design, proofing, printing and then installation at site (for e.g. inshop/outshop display material). To serve our clients better, we have our own inhouse logistics system for faster delivery of finished jobs as we can't rely on external courier agencies. Underline the word 'service' and that is what the customers expect from us in real sense. Our aim is to provide excellent products and services to our customers and take pride in doing it.

Being a total solution provider, your views on screen vs digital combo:
We do not print on paper; we always print on rigid substrates. It is our experience that digital is suitable for flex and vinyl substrates where as screen is suitable for rigid and semi rigid substrates like sunpack and sunboards. We use both the print process with a balancing act. The ratio of Screen:Digital in our operations is: 50:50. But, last year the ratio was 65 (Screen):35 (Digital). Now you can understand our view on screen printing and digital. We use digital for small runs.

How are you moving with AccuSpeed?
As the name suggest ' AccuSpeed, this is the machine for faster work. It is used for printing sunpack and sunboard. We are totally satisfied with their service back up and capabilities of the machines. In short, the machines are giving accurate results thus minimizing wastage.

What is the crucial stage in screen printing?
Being in the shopfloor it is my experience that we should give top most importance to doing all the pre press preparations accurately in as much as we give top priority to printing. On the contrary, accuracy in pre press work is also important to achieve desired results in printing. So, printers should have good pre press set up and we have the one from Grafica.

So, are you happy with their pre press set up?
We are happy with the results that we are getting from the entire Grafica's pre press set up. We are also happy that there is no breakdown since they all have well built structure. If breakdown occurs frequently, it is virtually not possible for the manufacturer to come down to Jharkhand every time all the way from Mumbai. So, in printing line, all the machine and equipment should be strong enough to withstand the hectic operations like ours.

About installation & training?
Understanding the techniques was not a big problem for our staff since they are highly skilled. Apart from the start up training given by them, over a dozen employees have attended DMI workshop. I myself also attended their workshop, besides meeting Grafica at various exhibitions to see in case of new arrivals.
