Action-packed SPAI-FESPA Awards Nite in Goa
14th September 2017
Over 150 print professionals gathered at Goa's beach resort, Holiday Inn on 14th September 2017 to celebrate 'Excellence in Screen, Digital and Textile Printing'. The Awards competition drew some of the most reputed names from the screen printing industry competing each other with their finest work of creativity. The 'print competition', perhaps the first and one of its kind in Indian screen printing industry, had received over 400 entries under 15 main categories.
The glittering and entertainment filled awards celebrations began with the National Anthem followed by Lighting of the Holy Lamp. A newly created logo of SPAI (Screen Printers’ Association of India) was also unveiled by cutting cake and a video presentation.
In his welcome address, Mustafa Kapadia, President of SPAI, touched upon SPAI's activities and its affiliation to FESPA. He thanked all the jury members for their painstakingly judging such voluminous entries just in two days. These judges were honoured by SPAI top office bearers, for their untiring and unbiased judgments for which they had spent day-night on 12, 13 and 14th September 2017 in Goa. Mustafa also thanked Bhargav Mistry for his tireless effort in making the Awards event a great success. He also thanked all the sponsors of the event.
As the Award ceremony gathered momentum, Bhargav Mistry delivered a keynote speech on SPAI-FESPA Awards. While ending his speech, he also introduced the 18-member team of musicians from NODA (National Organisation of Disabled Artists).
The stage was then set for presentation of much awaited performance awards in screen, digital and textile printing. The award presentation was started by CONGRATULATING 5 Indian companies who made India proud by winning awards at the recent FESPA 2017 in Hamberg, Germany, viz, Classic Stripes, Shakti Keypads, Tarun Print Tech, Keetronics and Protolab.
The SPAI-FESPA 2017 Awards were presented in two phases. After the first set of awards, a series of Special Awards were presented. To begin with, Bhargav Mistry was called on the stage to explain the rationale behind instituting such special awards (Details on page 10 & 11).
After presentation of the remaining Categories of Awards, DMI team, viz, Shailesh and Rishi, were felicitated for their unending coordination, follow ups, data entry, segregation, management and administration and other efforts taken by them to make this a successful event. An award of appreciation was announced to Aashna Mistry for designing SPAI’s new logo. In her absence, the honour was received by Neha Mistry. Finally, the voluntary work of students from GIPT (Government Institute of Printing Technology, Mumbai), were also appreciated with a round of applause.
The special attraction of the event was a series of theme based/story-telling musical performance by NODA Artists, who can never see the harmony of colors like all printers see. But with their extra ordinary performance they proved that they simple create magic in their music with harmony.
To me the recently concluded successful SPAI-FESPA 2017 Awards Nite on 14th September 2017 in Goa was professionally satisfying experience.
Over 150 print professionals gathered at Goa's beach resort, Holiday Inn to celebrate 'Excellence in Screen, Digital and Textile Printing', I mean, the SPAI-FESPA Awards 2017 which drew some of the biggest names from the screen printing industry competing each other with their finest work of creativity.
In the past several years I had visited many international Awards events such as FESPA, SGIA, etc. But I must say that the entry samples received for SPAI-FESPA Awards were, by any standards, world class. Even the judges were fascinated to see such innovative samples printed on numerous substrates such as paper, hand-made paper, plastic, acrylic, sunpack, sunboard, metal, sand, textile, etc. So, irrespective of whether they won or not, I must congratulate all the printers who had sent in their entries whole-heartedly (some of them first timers) with a true spirit of competition. Thank you all printers.
I must say that "PRODUCING award winning jobs with creativity was indeed a big TASK. However, JUDGING such voluminous entries with eye for details is too big task IN JUST 2 DAYS (Over 400 entries under 15 categories)! So, the event would have never been successful without the tireless contribution of the most known experts from the printing fraternity, that is, the team of judges. The judges had to stay over-night to finish their judging task in 2 and half days.
So I thank my guru Michel Caza, for being one of the judges of SPAI-FESPA Awards'17. I also sincerely thank my other international friends and colleagues at ASDPT, who willingly accepted my invitation on behalf of SPAI, to be judges for the Awards. THANK you Jacek Stencel, Artem Nadirashvili, and Bernard Banks, and thanks of course my friend, Kamlakar Wadekar who was also a judge for Awards.
Oh, I personally felt that 'competing' in Awards is easier than 'completing' all the necessary procedures, involved behind such a mega event! So, I must also place on records the good team work of my DMI students for their tireless efforts in completing all the tasks ahead of the competition and during the Gala Nite. I also thank GIPT’s students who had spent more than ten days assisting our DMI steam to complete task, amidst their hectic studies.
This time we had also instituted several special awards for achievements in screen printing. We at SPAI felt that apart from regular business of printing … and winning awards, there were several entrepreneurs who have had a long stint in the screen printing industry but they deserved a pat on their backs. Their achievements were hitherto gone unnoticed but SPAI has decided to honour them.
I would also like thank the entire SPAI Board for giving me an opportunity to organize the SPAI-FESPA Awards 2017 with free hand to decide at different stages of the event.
Meanwhile, let us keep aside the business of Awards, but I must commend the 18 member team of NODA (National Organisation of Disabled Artists) for their enthralling music concert which gave solace to the participants. As the NODA team made their grand finale with a patriotic song, I personally made a humanitarian appeal to the audience to make generous contributions to NODA. It was touching moment when several entrepreneurs spontaneously responded to my appeal by making generous contributions to NODA to support their cause. Thank you all.
I also thank Michel, Jacek, Artem and Bernard who visited DMI amidst their hectic travel plan to Goa. During their visit they interacted with my DMI team and GIPT students and gave them some core tips and 'gyan' necessary for becoming good and successful printers.
